Foxhall Keene
At
the age of 17, Foxhall Keene represented the United States
in the inaugural Westchester Cup competition against Great
Britain. The talented young rider scored the first goal of
the series in the first 24 seconds of the game and went on
to become America’s first 10-goal player.
Keene played in Westchester cup
action in 1886 and 1902, and in an “unofficial”
match in England in 1900, following his Olympic Gold Medal
appearance in Paris on the Foxhunters Hurlingham polo team.
In 1913 he was prepared to take
the field as the captain of the US Westchester Cup team when
he had a fall in the final practice and suffered a broken
collarbone. For nine years he stood at the top of the handicap
list with a 10-goal rating for another nine years he carried
a 9-goal rating.
